Buss, Hilda

Consultant at Exponent

Hilda Buss, Ph.D., P.E. With over a decade of experience in the polymer science field, Dr. Buss’ interests include using structure-property relationships of materials to address real-world problems. Dr. Buss has experience in product development, scale up, and failure analysis of polymer systems ranging from construction materials such as coatings, roofing, pipe, to medical devices and personal care products. Dr. Buss has assisted clients in all stages of product life from product design for performance and sustainability to in-field performance and failure analysis.

Prior to joining Exponent, Dr. Buss worked at Dow Chemical, developing new monomers for use in acrylic emulsion polymerization for binders and rheology modifiers. These latexes were used in a range of applications including skin protection, coatings, and construction materials. While at Dow she also developed methods for evaluating primary cleaning in the auto-dishwashing market and used data analytics to optimize the operation of several industrial wastewater treatment plants. During her doctoral at the University of California at Berkeley, Dr. Buss' research was focused on marine antifouling coatings and high transference number electrolytes for batteries.
